Dr. Assini, MD, FRCSC, FAAOS, is a board certified, fellowship trained hip and knee specialist. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Canada.

Career

Dr Assini is a Board Certified Orthopedic surgeon in both the US and Canada. He began his career in Denver after fellowship in New York City. Since 2014 he has been in private practice in Denver, CO. He was initially an attending surgeon at Swedish Medical Center, where he built and served as Medical Director of the Advanced Joint Reconstruction Program. In 2024 he was recruited to join Colorado's premier Hip & Knee Replacement practice, Colorado Joint Replacement. Here, Dr Assini has continued to innovate, teach and participate in research related to total joint replacement. His practice specializes in hip and knee replacement and the revision of failed or painful hip and knee implants. One of Dr. Assini's main focuses is rapid recovery total joint replacement, which strives to get patients back to full function as quickly as possible. In 2025 he co-founded Canadian Concierge Orthopedics, which is a concierge based program designed for Canadian patients seeking alternative options for joint replacement.

Background

Dr Assini grew up in Canada and has lived in Colorado since 2014. After receiving his undergraduate degree with Honours from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, he attended medical school at the University of Sydney in Australia, graduating with honors. Dr. Assini then completed residency training in his hometown of London, Ontario, Canada in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Western University. He was privileged to learn from some of the best orthopedic surgeons in Canada during his residency training.

Fellowship

After residency, he was selected as a clinical fellow in adult reconstruction and joint replacement at Weill-Cornell Medical College and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. This is one of the most sought after fellowships in North America at the #1 ranked Orthopedic hospital in the US. Here he learned from leaders in the field, both past and present. He was trained on modern minimally-invasive techniques and robotic procedures that when used appropriately, can significantly improve a patient's outcomes. He was also exposed to some of the most complex and difficult cases in the country.

Development & Innovation

Since 2015 Dr. Assini has worked as a consultant for Microport Orthopedics. In that time, he has educated surgeons, lectured internationally and had the opportunity to help design 2 femoral stems, revision TKA instrumentation and innovate a new robotics system for TKA. Additionally he is one of the innovators of the AnteriorPATH technique for total hip replacement. This is an evolution of the anterior hip approach and is utilized throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Most recently, Dr Assini was appointed to the Advisory Board for the TiRobot.

Research

Dr. Assini is currently participating in multiple clinical studies. You may be asked by Dr. Assini or his team to participate. It is always your choice whether you participate or not, but each study is being conducted to help improve total joint replacements and associated outcomes. In the area of research, he is most interested in helping patients recover more quickly. Currently he is leading a large study looking at a novel drug to decrease narcotics in TKA. As a fellow Dr. Assini extensively studied the effects of metal-on-metal total hip implants and the reasons for failure. This study, in addition to some of Dr. Assini's past research, has been selected for presentation at national and international meetings.

Memberships

Dr Assini is an active member of many professional associations, both at the local and international level. He serves on the Executive OR Governance Committee at Porter Hospital and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Western Orthopedic Association, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada), the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the Canadian Orthopedic Association.

Personal

In his spare time, Dr. Assini enjoys many outdoor activities, including golf, skiing and mountain biking. Both he and his wife are very active and share the lifestyle Colorado offers with their two daughters.
