About Dr. Assini

Dr. Assini, MD, FRCS(C), is a board certified, fellowship trained hip and knee specialist. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Canada. For the past 3 years Dr. Assini has been the Medical Director of the Advanced Joint Reconstruction Program at Swedish Hospital in Denver, CO.

His practice specializes in hip and knee replacement and the revision of failed or painful hip and knee implants. One of Dr. Assini’s main focuses is on rapid recovery total joint replacement, which strives to get patients back to full function as quickly as possible.

Dr. Assini is on the design team of a new hip implant, which has been specifically designed to allow surgeons to perform more minimally invasive surgery. In addition, he is one of 5 surgeons that have collaborated to develop a novel technique for total hip arthroplasty, AnteriorPATH (Portal Assisted Total Hip). He is the only surgeon in Colorado performing this technique and has been actively training surgeons around the country.

Dr. Assini is a Board Member of Rocky Mountain Surgical Center and serves as a consultant and surgeon-designer for Microport Orthopedics, INC. Additionally he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Western
Orthopedic Association, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and the Canadian Orthopedic Association.

Overview

Joseph Assini, MD, has lived in Colorado since 2014. He specializes in adult hip and knee replacement and joint reconstruction. His practice focuses mainly on hip and knee replacement and general orthopedic trauma. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, he attended medical school at the University of Sydney in Australia, graduating with honors. Dr. Assini then completed residency training in his hometown of London, Ontario, Canada in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Western University.

Post-Residency

After residency, he undertook a clinical fellowship in adult reconstruction and joint replacement at Weill-Cornell Medical College and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he learned from leaders in the field, both past and present. He was trained on modern minimally-invasive techniques and computer-assisted procedures that when used appropriately, can significantly improve a patient’s outcomes. He was also exposed to some of the most complex and difficult cases in the country.

Microport Orthopedics

Since 2015 Dr. Assini has worked as a consultant for Microport Orthopedics. In that time, he has helped design a new femoral stem for hip replacement. Additionally, Dr. Assini is part of 5 surgeon team that has designed, tested and introduced a novel technique for hip replacement. Known as AnteriorPATH or Anterior Portal Assisted Total Hip, this technique has been designed to make the anterior hip approach less invasive and can offer faster healing for patients. Currently the technique is be taught by Dr. Assini and other designing surgeons to physicians around North America and Europe.

Research

Dr. Assini is currently participating in multiple clinical studies. You may be asked by Dr. Assini or his team to participate. It is always your choice whether you participate or not, but each study is being conducted to help improve total joint replacements and associated outcomes.

 

Associations & Certifications

In the area of research, Dr. Assini has extensively studied the effects of metal-on-metal total hip implants. He examined the reasons for failure and how to manage patients with these failed implants. This study, in addition to some of Dr. Assini’s past research, has been selected for presentation at national and international meetings.

Hobbies

In his spare time, Dr. Assini enjoys many outdoor activities, including golf, skiing and mountain biking. Both he and his wife are very excited to share the lifestyle Colorado offers with their two daughters.
