Overview
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA), or total knee replacement, is a well-established procedure designed to relieve pain and restore function in patients with advanced knee arthritis or significant joint damage.
During surgery, the damaged surfaces of the knee are carefully removed and replaced with durable metal and polyethylene components. The goal is to restore the knee's alignment, stability, and movement while preserving as much of the patient's natural anatomy as possible.
Modern knee replacement techniques can be personalized to each patient's unique anatomy and alignment. Patient-specific planning and kinematically aligned techniques aim to more closely reproduce the individual's natural knee geometry and mechanics rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Recovery
Following surgery, patients typically begin walking soon after the procedure and progress through rehabilitation focused on restoring motion, strength, stability, and confidence. Recovery varies from person to person, but many patients gradually return to normal daily activities and low-impact recreational activities as healing progresses.
